Jenny Agutter

Jenny Agutter : Biography

Jennifer Ann Agutter was born December 20, 1952, in Taunton, Somerset, England. Jenny's father, Derek Brodie Agutter, a native of Yorkshire, was an officer in the British Army. Her mother was the former Catherine "Kit" Lyman, originally of St. Helen's in Lancashire. Her parents met in Egypt where Mr. Agutter was involved in Forces Entertainment and her mother was serving in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force. Jenny grew up traveling the world, living in Germany, Singapore, Cyprus, Ceylon and Malaysia, among other places. At age 11 she attended the Elmhurst Ballet School, Camberly, Surrey, UK. While on a return trip to Cyprus in 1964 the family found themselves inadvertantly in the midst of a skirmish between the Greek and Turkish factions. In 1989 Jenny met Swedish hotelier Johan Tham at an arts festival in Bath, UK. They were married in August of the next year and a son, Jonathan, was born that Christmas. Jenny pulled up stakes from Los Angeles and the family settled in her native southern England; currently making their home in Cornwall. While her film appearances are a bit more sporadic these days (her last feature film appearance was in 1995's Blue Juice), Jenny keeps busy working in television, theatre, radio, and making audio novel recordings (including a recent vocal recording of The Railway Children).

Jenny Agutter: Career

In Britain, Jenny Agutter is a respected stage actress; in America, she is remembered as the star of the fantasy films Logan's Run (1976) and An American Werewolf in London (1981). Agutter was still a teen when she appeared in the films The Railway Children (1970, as Roberta) and Walkabout (1971, directed by Nicholas Roeg). Her theater career grew apace; in 1974 she played Miranda in Shakespeare's The Tempest at the National Theater, opposite Sir John Gielgud as Prospero. In the mid-1970s she jumped to Hollywood, appearing as Michael York's love interest in the futuristic sci-fi movie Logan's Run (a film made famous by the brief appearance of Farrah Fawcett). Agutter also appeared in The Man in the Iron Mask (1976, TV, with Richard Chamberlain) and Equus (1977, with Richard Burton); finally she played the nurse in the black comedy An American Werewolf in London. She returned to the theater in the 1980s and 1990s, appearing with the Royal Shakespearian Company and elsewhere. In 2000 she appeared in a new version of The Railway Children, this time in the grown-up role of Mother.
